Sisters Helping Sisters

Started by Jenna
Last Posted to on Tuesday, May 21, 2013 8:58:47 PM by Jenna
<root>My name is Jenna Williamson, newly an alum, from the Alpha Pi Chapter at the University of North Dakota. We don't know each other, but I am hoping that sisterhood can draw us closer, because I am messaging you to ask for a huge favor. On June 1st I will begin driving down to Florida alone because I am participating in the Disney College Program. While it is going to be a great experience, I am going to be far from my home and my Alpha Chi sisters.

Additionally, making the journey alone brings its own set of challenges. My financial situation is going to be tight trying to get to Florida on my own dollar and I was wondering if anyone along my route would be able to extend a helping hand and open home by allowing me to stay with them for the evening. This would save me the cost of a hotel room before my last leg to Orlando and I am open to about anything.

My route starts from Delavan, WI and goes to Orlando, FL. Somewhere near Nashville, TN would make a great half way stop, but I am willing to divide my 21 hour trip into more sections too.

THANK YOU! </root>

PA vs MD vs DO

1 Replies, 1173 Views
Started by Angela
Last Posted to on Wednesday, May 01, 2013 4:14:29 PM by Laura
<root>
Hi,

I'm a second year medical student at Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio (MD program). (Sorry we can't really meet up but I'll leave my email address if you want to take the conversation off the board.)

I have several friends who have taken different paths within healthcare and what it comes down to is two things: what you actually want to be doing & how much of your life you are willing to commit to your career. Don't get me wrong, all the people who work in healthcare make a big commitment to their careers but you need to think about if you're prepared to work over 80 hours a week and spend more nights in the hospital than at home (MD/ DO) or if you want to have slightly more of an outside life (PA; who still work some long hours).

I'm sure you've looked this stuff up but PA is school is a 2 year program & then you'll start working. Keep in mind that this is a growing field that offers you a lot of opportunities to specialize BUT you will still technically be underneath the MD or DO.

Both MD's & DO's get called "doctor" but the programs are slightly different (for this reason, DO programs usually expect applicants to not only shadow a DO but have a letter of rec from a DO). When it comes to residencies you'll find that there are DO only programs, MD only programs, & programs that take either. If you do a DO program, you can take the MD boards & apply to MD residencies but it will be more competitive for you than applying to DO residencies. Traditionally DO's do more of the general or primary care positions and MD's do more subspecialties but this is not black & white and this has been changing slowly to be more mixed. You can do anything with either degree. (I can't really say if it's better to be at the bottom of your class in an MD program than to be at the top of your class in DO program or vice versa, that would be a question for a residency director.)

DO programs have the osteopathic/ manipulation stuff worked into their curriculum so it's a little more "touchy feely" and they are usually community based programs. Meaning that the school doesn't have it's own hospital but that you go to the local clinics & hospitals or even to other school's hospitals for your 3rd & 4th year clerkships. Some MD programs (like mine) are community based but less frequently require students to do rotations in other cities (it's almost always an option to do "away rotations" in your 4th year) but most MD programs have a attached hospital.

Also, you will find that it is less competitive to get into DO schools than MD schools so you may need to look at your application to decide if it's better to apply one way or the other or both. I know several people who applied to both with DO programs as their "safety" programs and I know several people who applied strictly to DO schools because they liked them better. (Keep in mind that they are separate application services.)

I think that no matter what you'll find your career rewarding but I have met PA's that go back to get an MD (there's one in my class) & I have on occasion wished that I just did a PA program because I would be graduating now (instead of having 2 more years).

With that in mind, all 3 of the programs are looking for applicants who are very dedicated & who know what they are getting themselves into. So if you haven't yet, you should shadow & volunteer in healthcare & if you can get involved in medically related research. Also, check out student-doctor network (online forum) that may help you decide.

I hope that helps a little, it's one of those decisions that requires some soul-searching & requires you to be completely honest with what you want out of life.

Consider watching Boston Med or Hopkins or NY Med (full episodes available on youtube) because it shows a lot of the sides of medicine.

If you have more questions or need a better explanation of something let me know by email (laura.rae17@gmail.com).

Good luck!!!

LITB,

Laura
</root>

Looking for strong women in the insurance/reinsurance industry

I know many of us work in some pretty male dominated industries and that can become frustrating at times. Women across the world try to change that every day, but wouldn't it be great to have more Alpha Chi's leading that change?

I am a young lawyer in the reinsurance/insurance industry, where I represent reinsurance/insurance companies in both litigation and regulatory matters. It is a fairly male dominated industry, both on the legal side and the reinsurance/insurance industry side. I'd really like to change that by connecting with other reinsurance/insurance female professionals so that we can work together and form our own network - becoming strong leaders in the industry, provide referrals, advice and most importantly, support.

If anyone in the reinsurance/insurance industry is in the New York/Metro area and would like to get together or to expand our network (and of course if anyone in the reinsurance/insurance industry is looking for legal representation or advice), please feel free to contact me.

I am currently planning a Magazine Internship in NYC for Summer 2012. My family is a little bit pressed for money right now, so I am looking for the best housing (late May-mid August)for the best deal I can find! I am not opposed to living with someone or a family, or if you know someone looking for a roommate that would be wonderful as well! I am also going to be looking for friends while I'm in the city, as I will most likely be there by myself for the summer! Please feel free to contact me if you can help out or if you're an NYC native!

I plan on graduating with a BA in Political Science and a minor in Spanish in December 2012. After graduating, I plan on attending law school and would love to have some experience working in a law office or in a legal setting. As of right now I am interested in intellectual property law, but I am open to anything that is available. I have previously worked on political campaigns, but that is about as extensive as my political/legal experience goes.

I live in Michigan during the summer so anything in the Midwest would be ideal, however, depending on the circumstances I would be willing to go anywhere in order to get some great first-hand experience. As far as my current status with Alpha Chi Omega, I was just elected to be Beta Phi's VP Chapter Relations and Standards and will also be attending the Leadership Academy in January, something I am extremely excited for. I am also, at the moment, studying abroad in Alcalá de Henares, Spain and will be returning back to the United States just in time for the holiday break.

Any information regarding legal internships would be greatly appreciated.
Homecoming from Deployment

0 Replies, 2362 Views
Started by Lauren
Last Posted to on Monday, March 21, 2011 10:49:11 PM by Lauren

Hey ladies! My Fiance is currently stationed at Camp Pendleton in California. He is currently on deployment, and I know this is far out in advance, but he comes back at the end of September. I was wanting to go see him when he comes home since all of his family is currently in Florida (where I am). I dont want him to get off the ship to no one, when everyone else has someone. Is there any sister in San Diego that would be willing to pick me up from the airport (idk dates and wont until closer to time) and maybe house me for a night seeing as they would get in early in the morning and i would need to fly in the day before. anything is GREATLY appreciated!!

Helping a Future-AXO with her project for NASA

Hi all,

My little sister and future AXO (according to
her) is in the seventh grade in Northern Virginia and entered in a video
competition sponsored by NASA. She made a video about using NASA
technology to help fight America's growing obesity problem. She would
really appreciate it if you all could take a look at her video, called
"Fighting Weight with Weightlessness" and vote for it. It's rare to find
a young woman who's so passionate about science and engineering and I'd
love it if we could encourage her to keep following this path.

The video is at http://ipp.gsfc.nasa.gov/optimus/voting.php

It
is in the 6th-8th grade category and it's called Fighting Weight with
Weightlessness. The voting button is right underneath the video.

Thanks so much for all your support!</root>

Fitness Programs

0 Replies, 3240 Views
Started by Jodi
Last Posted to on Tuesday, July 20, 2010 11:12:16 AM by Jodi

My husband and I just completed a fitness program called P90X. It is an at home fitness program and nutrition plan. We both saw great results; he lost 20 lbs. and I lost 15 lbs. He later made the decision to become an Independent Beach Body Coach. An important part about being a coach is reaching out to your friends and colleagues and telling them about the program. I figured a great place to start would be with my Alpha Chi Omega sisters.

Beach Body is a company that produces fitness videos like P90X. They are easy to follow and are comprised of many different works that are guaranteed to get you into the best shape of your life! The videos focus on Arms, Shoulders, Biceps, Triceps, Abs, Legs, Back, & Core. They also throw in Cardio, Yoga, Core Synergistics, and even a little Martial Arts! They also have a program called Insanity which is all Cardio and is as insane as it sounds! All Beach Body programs include a nutrition plan to help you achieve the best results possible.

I would love to see the sisters and alumni of Alpha Chi Omega decide to take the P90X challenge and get together and get fit! The videos can also be taken to the student centers, gyms, or be done at home.

If you’re interested in learning more about these Beach Body programs, please contact me at jodicastagnier@gmail.com or email my husband Jake at jvanwoerkom@gmail.com. You can also visit www.beachbodycoach.com/jvanwoerkom if you want to see snippets of the workout videos.

We’ll also be there to guide you as you work through the program, so you can email or call us anytime you have questions!

LIOB,
Jodi VanWoerkom
202-436-5092
