ALUMNAE CHAPTERS

Alumnae chapters provide an instant network of friendship and support, no matter where life takes you. Alpha Chi Omega has over 200 alumnae chapters across the United States. Some large cities have several alumnae groups. They range in size from a handful of sisters to groups of over 100 women. Like our collegiate chapters, our alumnae chapters differ according to location and function.  Our alumnae chapters support our collegiate chapters by volunteering during recruitment, organizing Hall of Commitment for graduating seniors, and offering assistance through mentoring or moral support.   Our alumnae chapters also participate in our Domestic Violence Awareness Month initiatives and raise money for our Foundation.

History of Alumnae Chapters
In 1902, Alpha Chi Omega conventioneers in Evanston, Illinois voted for the chartering of alumnae groups as full-fledged chapters which would be granted one vote at national conventions.  At a time when people were beginning to become more mobile, the alumnae chapters provided Alpha Chis the opportunities to find other Alpha Chis in their new cities and towns.  Today, with more than 190,000 alumnae, and more than 200 active alumnae chapters across the United States, our alumnae chapters continue to bring Alpha Chis together.

What do alumnae chapters do?
The purposes of our alumnae chapters are:

  • To stimulate interest in the Fraternity at large on the part of members of Alpha Chi Omega in this area.
  • To support collegiate chapter(s).
  • To gain recognition and respect for Alpha Chi Omega in the community.
  • To support the Alpha Chi Omega Foundation.
  • To observe Founders’ Day and Hera Day.
  • To participate actively in the alumnae Panhellenic.
  • To promote the fine arts among its members and the community.
  • To support victims of domestic violence shelters and programs.
  • To welcome new members who relocate to the community.

IMPORTANT NOTICE REGARDING NEW IRS FILING REQUIREMENTS FOR ALUMNAE CHAPTERS

Due to recent changes in tax law, Alpha Chi Omega alumnae chapters will now have a filing requirement with the IRS.

Prior to the upcoming 2007-08 fiscal year, small tax-exempt organizations with gross receipts less than $25,000 annually were not required to file form 990 with the IRS.  Most alumnae chapters fall into this category and therefore were not required to file with the IRS.

With the enactment of the Pension Protection Act in 2006, this requirement has changed.  Small tax-exempt organizations are now required to file an electronic Form 990-N with the IRS annually.  Alpha Chi Omega alumnae chapters will now be required to file the Form 990-N.  The law takes effect the first fiscal year ending in 2008.  Our fiscal year runs August 1– July 31.  Groups will have five months following the end of the fiscal year to file.  The due date for Alpha Chi Omega alumnae chapters to file the Form 990-N will be December 15th, 2008.  Note that the first filing date requirement is December 2008 – for the 2007-08 fiscal year.

We will continue to request the Form A105.  In addition to the form, we would like documentation of your filing with the IRS.  In the event that a chapter does not file by December 1, 2008, we will employ the services of our accounting firm, CIAO Consulting LLC to file for the chapter.  The chapter will then be billed by CIAO for the service.  The charge will be $40.  If your chapter wishes to use the accounting firm to file your form, CIAO’s fee is $25 prior to December 1, 2008.  You are welcome to use your own accounting services as well.

Attached is a Frequently Asked Questions document from the IRS web site.  The document includes a list of the information the IRS will be requesting when you file.
