What good is the Alpha Chi network unless you work it?  Ask your sisters for career advice, lend your expertise.

Alaina,

I'm in the PR field, and would be happy to answer any questions you may have about getting started in this industry.  As you well know, this is a difficult time to break into PR - the recession has hit many agencies and in-house PR departments hard.  However, there are positions out there, so keep networking and keep the faith!

Email me at karina@affinity-consultants.com with your contact info, and I'd be happy to share with you a Career Networking Database that we pulled together here in Southern California.  There are lots of PR/marketing/event planning alumnae who said they'd be willing to review resumes, offer informational interviews ... some even to have a sister shadow them on the job!

Best of luck -

Loyally,

Karina

During my professional career (since getting my MBA in Strategy & Planning at the University of Alabama), I've worked in various industries (snack food, computers, packaged foods, telecommunications) and business fields (management accounting, budgeting, sales support, customer service, quality, operations, and more)! For the past 6 years, I've worked as a performance improvement consultant with for-profit companies and not-for-profit organizations in the midwest. Along with my partner, I own Tricend Consulting - so I also have learned a little about starting a business.

I'm happy to answer any questions that might help someone in the following areas:

- getting an MBA

- state school vs. big name MBA programs

- management accounting (I passed Certified Management Accountant exams in 1993)

- consulting

- starting a business

- customer service

- training

- LEAN process improvement

- being a woman in a male-dominated industry

And more!

You can e-mail me at my work e-mail marsha@tricend.com or personal e-mail marshakgrady@gmail.com.

Dear Alpha Chi alumnae,

I am also a recent graduate from the Kappa Xi chapter, at the University of West Florida. I am weeks away from having to move home to Memphis because my student loans payments begin next month and my receptionist job just won't cut it anymore. I am 24, and am not excited about moving back in with my parents.

I want to find a fulfilling career that actually makes good use of my psychology degree, and thought I'd ask you for any advice on where to start.

I have a degree in psychology, minor in child welfare, and over five years of experience in the medical office setting as a receptionist/office manager. I am not ready for graduate school, and would like to find an opportunity to begin a career, not just another job.

My ideal career would involve helping others, maybe in a non-profit or health care environment. I know there are few jobs a psychology degree will qualify one for, but may ability to relate to others and make them feel at ease is what I am most proud of and can't that be used in any setting?

Anyways, I am willing to move just about anywhere at this point and am looking for a new start.

Can anyone give me any advice or know of anywhere that may be looking for someone like me?

My email is gpearson531@gmail.com , and I'll check back here often.

Any input is appreciated!

Loyally,

Gina Pearson

Hello Sisters,

I am a 2006 graduate from the University of Missouri, Alpha Nu Chapter, and have been living/working in Chicago since that time.  In two weeks I will be moving to Oklahoma City, OK and was hoping there might be some connections out there that I could utilize.  I have been a non-profit Supervisor for the past 2 years, but am open to working in any industry.  If anyone has any advice or connections, please let me know.

Greetings Alpha Chi's

I recently graduated from Rutgers University with a BA in Psychology. I am looking to find an open position at a University, I have currently applied to the following schools : Pace, Columbia, St. John's, Marymount Manhattan College, Queen's College, Steven's Institute of Technology,College of Saint Elizabeth, and Fairleigh Dickinson. I am a New Jersey resident that lives about 45 minutes from NYC and 30 minutes from Hoboken. I am a go getter and looking for a job.

MY AXO Background:

2006- As the chapter president of Alpha Chi Omega at Theta Tau chapter I was in charge of 22 residents and 65 members who helped me acquire strong leadership and interpersonal skills. I have acquired skills that enable me to think quickly in emergencies, quickly assess situations and make appropriate decisions that would be great tools for the position any open position. Dealing with the diverse concerns of students, parents, and faculty, I have become adept at operating with the proper mix of authority, diplomacy, and tact. While working in this demanding position, I was given the opportunity to attend many leadership workshops that helped strengthen my skills.

2005 Vice President of Pan-Hellenic Council University of North Dakota, Report to all of Interfraternal Council, Pan-Hellenic Council, and Presidents Roundtable meetings. Plan and hold new member education programs for the entire Greek Community. In conjunction with Relay For Life I planned Greek Week. Greek Week- is a weeklong. Participation from all Greek organizations that compete in spirit points, banner competitions, sportsmanship, and many other categories. My job was to create a committee and plan for the entertainment, food, location, and community outreach.

I am eager to make a positive contribution to a University or a company, I just finished up coaching a JV girl’s lacrosse team at Randolph High School and have been looking for a job at a University that will provide me the opportunity to pursue a master’s degree in the student life field while working and contributing to the University.

If anyone has any help with gaining a position at a university either in NY or NJ please contact me I will check back here frequently , thank you happy

Good Morning Alpha Chis,

I hope everyone has some fun plans for the fourth of July weekend!

And I hope that y'all have Monday off so you are able to enjoy America's birthday to the fullest.

My name is Stephanie Barnes and I just graduated from Florida State University in Tallahassee.  I graduated Cum Laude with a BS in Communications:Advertising and a minor in Business and Spanish.

I have since moved home to Tampa and applied to several different positions nationwide but with no luck.  I am looking to start my career path in marketing, sales or advertising and willing to relocate almost anywhere.

Now, after running into so many dead ends, I was hoping to find some advice and guidance from my AXO sisters.  Alpha Chi is such a large and diverse community, I figured that it is one of my strongest sources for information and networking.

So if you get a chance, I would very much appreciate any ideas or suggestions on my career pursuit.  I am always looking for another's perspective.happyI have also attached my resume to this post for review as well.  I am sure it needs some work so I welcome your critiques.

I can be reached via e-mail at:

barnes.stephanie123@gmail.com

Thank you so much for your help!  I really appreciate it!

LITB,

Stephanie Barnes

I was one of Steph Barnes' advisors at Beta Eta and can attest to her character and abilities!

Wishing you the best Steph!  Did you join LinkedIn?  That is another place to make connections ... and I assume you've explored FSU's career center website and connected through there?

Hello Ladies!

I am also a recent graduate of Rutgers University in New Jersey and am looking for employment opportunities in either the Northern NJ/ NYC area or the Washington D.C. area! I graduated Cum Laude with my BA in Planning and Public Policy and minored in Political Science and Psychology.

I have professional work experience as an international HR intern for Ernst & Young and a Community Development intern for Bergen County in NJ. In addition, I have significant leadership experience from both the chapter and other campus activities, most notably as the Director of Community Outreach for Rutgers University Dance Marathon 2010- the largest student run philanthropic event in the state of New Jersey. This year, RUDM raised over $378,000 for children affected by cancer and blood disorders.

Thanks to my major, my options for entry level jobs are pretty varied. I am most interested in positions that relate to Immigration policy in the private or public sector, but am also very interested in any form of public or private compliance/government relations, regulatory affairs, community development, or HR!

I have currently accepted a position for my Masters in Public Administration at American university in DC and deferred for a year in order to gain professional experience/ save funds! If you have any suggestions for me please feel free to contact me at Milana.Kantorovich@gmail.com. Thank you!

Milana

Hello AXO sisters,

I have graduated from college about a year ago, and let me admit I think I was more lost coming out of college than going in.  Due to the recession finding a job was nearly impossible for me, so I took any job I could find to at least tackle the first part of my loans (and living with my mom helped but I am ready to get out).  I am looking for someone who will be willing to look over my resume and tell me if it looks/feels professional enough to send out.  I would love to be in contact with anyone (not only to network) but to look at making a move to a different part of the United States.  The mid-west has been great to me but I am looking for a new challenge.  I have had this past year to really get my head together and figure out what exactly I want to do, now it is just about going after it that I have trouble.

I have a BS in Communications with a Minor in Conflict Management Business Marketing.  I am looking at either Higher Education, Non-profit or Human Resources.  I would love to start a career and ultimately end up going for a master's.  Right now I just would love to find someone who could give me feedback on my current tactics and share some that will work out for me.

I have attached my resume, so for any comments please feel free to contact me at the email on the resume.  I have also attached a sample cover letter for a position posted on the AXO website.  Any feedback is much appreciated.

THANKS!!!

LITB,

Brantley Bennett

Dear Sisters,

I am currently a JR Theatre Design and Production major with an emphasis in Stage Management. Recently I have gained an interest in both Event Management and theatre administration careers, and I really need help getting my foot in the door.

I realize getting an internship that pays is nearely impossible, but I unfortunately can't afford otherwise. I am willing to have a job on the side if given the time to do so. I hope to find something in the Dallas/ Plano area, or the Oklahoma City areas.

If not a summer job, any other advise would help me greatly. Email me at cterry.stu@my.okcu.edu. Thank you and LITB

Hello! My name is Rae and I am about to graduate from San Diego State University with a bachelors in Psychology and I was hoping for some feeback/help/anything from a fellow San Diegan. With graduation looming near I have been on the prowl for jobs in the psychology field in San Diego with not too much luck. Most postings for lab research/assistanships are from UCSD and I have applied to so many that I have the feeling they mostly hire within their own programs to fill the slots. If anyone has a lead on a job (not only for lab research) in any field that somehow relates (I am not picky) to psychology I would much appreciate a little bit of help! I am 22 years old, almost 23, and am a 2007 initiate. I am very quick and easily taught, I mean, I'm an AXO no surprise there, and I would love to hear from a sister in the field! Thank you in advance!
