Dr. Amy Hecht

Beta Eta (Florida State University)

With her experiences as an Alpha Chi Omega collegiate chapter president and consultant in her pocket, Dr. Amy Hecht is on a mission to transform campus culture at Florida State University, where she works as the vice president for student affairs.

“We’re working to change the culture in a positive way to ensure we have a more successful fraternity and sorority community that positively contributes to our campus and the individual members,” Hecht explains. “Change can be challenging, and to shift a culture takes time. Being persistent, consistently communicating and being adaptable helped me to take on this challenge, but we’re still working on it.”

Her professional experience in the student affairs field began in 2001, but Hecht’s affinity to the industry began as a collegiate Alpha Chi Omega, when, as chapter president, she worked alongside university administrators. Over the years, Hecht has built her career through leadership and management in the higher education field, and has volunteered her time with LeaderShape and the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators. She holds a bachelor’s degree in mass communication from Florida State University, and a master’s degree and doctorate in higher education administration from the University of Pennsylvania.

While guiding and providing vision to the Florida State campus community, Hecht has developed her personal measure of success.

“I think my greatest accomplishment is developing the confidence to listen to my instincts, not fear failure and lead authentically,” she says. “There are so many ways to lead and in our culture, we revere success, yet we often don’t see the hard work, the mistakes and uncertainty that leaders face all the time. To own that and not let fear of failure prevent me from pursuing a goal has been at the core of everything I’ve accomplished and am proud of.”
