For Julie Sandiford DeTemple, MD, FAAFP, Alpha Chi Omega helped her grow “from a relatively shy undergraduate to a confident young woman who was not afraid to take on leadership roles,” she says. This confidence was needed when she launched her career as a solo family practitioner, at a time when practicing as a partner would have been easier, especially for one of only a small number of female family doctors in Charleston, West Virginia.

The risk she took, though, has had a tremendous impact on her community.

“On a daily basis, I have the privilege of caring for my patients in some of their most vulnerable times, and provide them with physical, emotional and spiritual support,” DeTemple explains. “As a businesswoman, I have been able to provide stable employment for 16 other women in my community and provide a positive work environment in which they can thrive.”

With more than 15 years in practice, DeTemple has become an active member of the WV Aledade Accountable Care Organization, which aims to improve value-based medical care, and she is the medical director of the physician assistant program at the University of Charleston. She participates heavily in service, a value she says she learned through her collegiate years at Alpha Chi Omega.

DeTemple coordinates and participates in medical mission trips to Togo, West Africa, serving in inpatient and clinical settings and in mobile outreach clinics to rural villages.

“I learned the value of community service [from Alpha Chi Omega],” she says, “and the blessings that come with serving others.”
