As executive director of the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Ann Arbor, Kim Kelly has led monumental changes for the organization and, more importantly, for the families it serves. The RMHCAA aims to provide a “home away from home” for families of children with serious illnesses and those receiving treatment.

Alpha Chi Omega provided Kelly with numerous lessons that play a direct role in her career.

“I learned about being a good sister and friend, how to lead a team, how to fundraise, how to work with many different personalities and ways of thinking,” she notes. “I think most of all it gave me a sense of confidence.”

That confidence is key in her role. Kelly was at the helm of two major projects that have had a significant impact on families. Leading two separate capital campaigns that raised $3 million collectively, the RMHCAA renovated its House to provide a private bathroom for each family and built a second House within the hospital to serve even more people – now up to 1,200 families annually.

“When a parent has just found out that their child is seriously ill and will require long-term hospitalization or treatment, the last thing they need to be worried about is where they will stay or where their next meal will come from,” Kelly says. “We provide all the comforts of home so families can focus on what matters most – the health of their child.”

In addition to managing the fundraising and vision of these projects, Kelly has been instrumental in implementing best practices for operational and fundraising programs and for staff. She also serves with compassion, helping families on the confusing, difficult journey of childhood illness.
