After 25 years of supporting domestic violence awareness as our national philanthropy, Alpha Chi Omega has seen hundreds of walks, fundraisers and education sessions. Shana Brouder turned this philanthropy into a career with the Jewish Coalition Against Domestic Abuse.

“Alpha Chi Omega was the first organization that introduced me to the world of domestic violence work and advocacy,” says Brouder, the current chapter advisor for Gamma Theta (University of Maryland). “When I had an opportunity to apply for a job working at a domestic violence service provider, I jumped at it, because I already knew how fulfilling and meaningful the work was. The emphasis on women helping women is something that touched a chord in my heart and drove me to work in this field.”

As the communications and events coordinator, Brouder is responsible for communicating JCADA’s vast array of services to the Greater Washington, D.C. community, ensuring that all people, not just Jewish victims, affected by power-based violence see the organization as a place for hope and help.

“Talking about topics like domestic violence is hard enough, and some cultural barriers make the conversation almost impossible,” Brouder explains. “By working to identify these key cultural barriers and working to lower them based on these conversations, I have been able to help address some of the challenges related to marketing and communication of our services.”

Brouder also is in charge of the organization’s only fundraising event, a 5K. With her dedication and creativity, the event tripled its funds raised from the previous year, with surplus funds being put to use immediately for services. Additionally, she is implementing an outreach plan to increase recognition of JCADA in the community and in turn connect with more survivors.

“The fact that I can help even one person each day get closer to overcoming their past trauma and build a healthy future for themselves and their families makes it worth it,” Brouder notes.
