Where Authenticity Meets Belonging

Where Authenticity Meets Belonging

Hear how the Delta Tau chapter is building community and creating space for every sister to thrive.

Alpha Chi Omega is a sisterhood committed to creating spaces where all members feel a sense of belonging, and our collegiate chapters bring this commitment to life by celebrating members’ diverse perspectives and experiences.

For the Delta Tau (Minnesota State University, Mankato) chapter, building meaningful community isn’t just a goal – it’s the foundation of their membership experienceWithin this chapter, sisters have found true belonging, embraced their unique identities and discovered a “home away from home where they are welcomed with open arms.

Chapter executive board officers Kalissa Willie and Julia Sharp have been directly impacted by the culture of the Delta Tau chapter and were inspired to share their story. Their experiences and the intentional efforts of the chapter highlight what’s cultivated when inclusion is prioritized and every member is empowered to show up as her authentic self.

We hope their stories inspire you to foster inclusive environments of your own and to share your Notes of Belonging with those around you!

HOW HAS YOUR MEMBERSHIP IN ALPHA CHI OMEGA EMPOWERED YOU TO EMBRACE AND CELEBRATE YOUR UNIQUE IDENTITIES AND PERSONAL EXPERIENCES?

Kalissa: I do not believe I would be the person I am today without Alpha Chi Omega. I had always struggled with celebrating what makes me me,” and joining my chapter has given me the confidence. I was bullied a lot growing up, and these women have reminded me that the past doesn’t define me. I love my sisters and the bond of sisterhood with all my heart.

Julia: Before joining Alpha Chi OmegaI felt that I was taking up space. I didn't feel welcome anywhere, and I just didn't feel like I belonged anywhere. Alpha Chi has given me a place to be myself. I have always felt like the odd one out, and my sisters in my chapter have loved and accepted me for all that makes me unique and different. I have never felt judged for being me. It is a breath of fresh air and the first time that I have felt like I belong.

What does belonging look like at Delta Tau? What makes your chapter special?

Kalissa: Belonging in Delta Tau is something that feels so unique. No one is a stranger within the chapter, and we all support each other in a lot of different ways.

since joining Alpha Chi Omega, How have you worked to champion change and encourage a deeper sense of connection and belonging for others?

Julia: Everywhere I go, I remember that each person is experiencing silent battles that no one knows about. All I can do is see each person as a unique and authentic being. I try my best to let others know that they are seen and they can be their true self. This means accepting people how they are and being kind.

In what ways do you contribute to creating spaces where individuals feel valued, included and supported to be their most authentic selves?

Julia: Each person has their own unique qualities, and I make sure that I acknowledge those qualities to make others feel comfortable and seen.

Kalissa: I really strive to make sure everyone is included and involved with what is happening. I believe that we cannot have harmony of life without being able to be selfless and respectful to our peers.
